The "Wonder" Painters

by Joe
(Santa Clarita, California)

I had my house painted by a couple of young guys who insisted that they knew what they were doing. When all was said and done all I think they knew how to do was take my money and screw up my house.

The wonder twins as I call them showed up with hand scrapers ready to get to work. I heard great stories about how the prep work was the most important. I heard about how bad lead paint was and how latex paint was the best thing to come along since the paint brush. A little less than 3 hours went by and I was told that the prep work was all done. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. These guys must be some great workers if they could scrape my house that fast and be ready to start painting.

The next day I found the twins outside putting patching all over my house and was told that this miracle product they had would be the answer to any problems down the road. No shrinking, no sanding, no worries was the line I was given. A little less than 2 hours went by and the twins were gone again for the day. I took a stroll around my house to see plenty of patching and plenty of work still to be done.

Day 3 came and went with nobody showing up. I phoned the twins only to get an answering machine. Later that afternoon one of them called me back to let me know that the "miracle" patch needed two days to dry.

Day 4 and I had to leave early that morning to take a quick trip across town. Upon my return at about 3 in the afternoon I saw my house a new color and a bill waiting for me in my mailbox. One look around the house and I could see that the entire house had been gone over and looked pretty complete. Payment was made.

It took about 2 weeks for the "Miracle" patch to fall out. Cracks showed up all over the house and bubbles started to form on the trim overhangs. The painter no longer answered his phone and I've not seen him or heard from him ever again.

The best advice I can offer to anyone looking for work to be done on their house would be to find the reputable businesses in the area and start with them. These are the people that are known to the local people who have hired and re-hired them over the years. I had to hire these people to fix what I hired the "Wonder Twins" to do in the first place. Don't make my mistake.

Great advice!
by: Yelena

A lot of people hire house painting contractors based on price alone, thinking they will save some money.

Unfortunately more often than not, they end up losing money, because the house painter they hired did not do what they hired him to do, and now they have to find somebody else to correct the problem or even finish the job.

Thank you for sharing your story, I'm sure some day it will really save somebody money, time and headache!
