Messy House Painters Ruined My House

by Candice
(Baltimore, MD, USA)

Personally in choosing a painting contractor I would suggest that homeowners look beyond price and I really do insist that they look for reputable companies that may cost a bit more but ensure professional service and quality work.

I was looking to have the first floor of my house painted. This paint job included the living room, dining room, a small den and the kitchen. I really needed everything painted at a reasonable but fairly cheap price so I went with a small painting contractor in my area that promised quality work for a significantly lower price than a better known competitor that was higher in price.

Basically this contractor came in my house and RUINED my hardwood floors and did a HORRIBLE paint job. The job which was supposed to be completed in a week’s time was never finished in a week because the guys who contracted to paint my house were booked to paint someone’s house also — so basically the company was overbooking appointments and didn’t have enough manpower.

They didn’t cover my floors properly — and some of the painters even moved the plastic I put down saying it was “getting in the way”. Paint eventually ended up on my hardwood floors and I was not the least bit happy about it. Also, a lot of my furniture was scuffed with them moving their ladders around and nicking my things.

My biggest mistake in hiring this contractor was basically taking the cheap way out. I should have chosen a more expensive bit more professional company to complete the paint job. Before I agreed to use their services I probably should have looked for reviews on the internet or from local people who may have used their services in the past. This would have probably steered me away from this catastrophe.

The major lesson I learned is that cheap is not always better and I know it sounds so cliché but it’s so true. I had to hire the company that I passed up to complete the job and it cost me even more money, stress and confusion which I didn’t want or need!

Be willing to spend the extra money to have a job done right and most importantly if you want to use a small company that you are unsure of, do some research first — so you don’t end up with the headache I had.

Steps to a Superior Exterior Paint Job
by: Elysium Painting, www.paintaa.com

When looking for a good quality painter, it is important to know that they recognize the steps to a proper exterior paint job. Here is a general list of what steps you would like your painter to follow:

Powerwash
-Clean the house with a low to medium power pressure washer, strong enough to remove dirt and peeling paint but careful enough to protect the siding
-If you have sensitive plants, cover them with plastic sheeting

Prep Work
-Replace rotten wood if needed
-Putty large gaps, cracks and holes
-Scrape away all failing paint
-Caulk small gaps and cracks
-Sand to create an even surface
-Perform minor maintenance in needed areas
-Prime all bare wood
-Protect roofs, gutters, decks, landscaping and other non-painted areas with tape, paper and canvas drop cloths
-Remove shutters
-Re-glaze damaged window panes
-Remove gutters and downspouts if requested, to fully paint the trim underneath

Paint
-Use a brush and roller to ensure highest quality and thoroughness
-Apply a thick, even coat on all areas
-Carefully create neat trim lines, using painter's tape if necessary
-Use high quality paint
-Leave the remaining paint with the homeowner for touch-ups

Clean-up
-Remove large paint chips, trimmed foliage, and other debris from the area
-Always store ladders and other materials in an area of your preference, usually behind your house so they don't get in your way

Inspection
-Do a final walk-through to make sure you're more than satisfied
