House Painter Pocketed the Extra Money

by Jeremy Grant
(Seattle, WA)

I had hired a house painter to paint my parents home. To choose a painting contractor I thought it was ok just to select a small one out of the phone book, because I thought the rates would be lower. I soon learned that this was a bad idea.

The painter who seemed like a good guy, encouraged me to buy the most expensive product. At first I just wanted to go with the regular stuff, but after him telling me over and over how much money I will save in the long run by paying more now, I naively agreed and gave the man the extra money without any knowledge of the paint product.

I was going to buy the paint myself but he said he will take care of it. I was thinking he was just doing me a favor, I was wrong. He painted my parents house (it took him 4 weeks) and did a crappy job. After about a month or two the paint began to peel and I realized the contractor had bought the cheapest product he could find and kept the money for himself.

I learned to always buy the paint yourself if you can and not be too trusting. After many attempts to call this contractor back I never was able to reach him. I had soon found out that his license had been revoked over 2 months before I had contracted with him.

From now on I'm only going to choose a house painter as a recommendation from friends or family and not going to randomly pick one of many out of a phone book.
