Hiring The Wrong House Painter

by Janice
(Tulsa, OK)

I had bought a new home and wanted to re-paint the interior. The house was not large and had completely white walls in the rooms I wanted painted. I hired a painting contractor who advertised himself as an experienced painter. His prices were very reasonable as well.

I went and bought all of the paint and the primer to be used for this simple job. The painting contractor was going to provide the equipment. He asked that I write the color on each wall that I wanted the wall to be painted as I was using several different colors. I did this in pencil as directed.

The painter contacted me about half way through the day while I was at work. He stated that he would need to have more paint to finish. I inquired as to why, as I had bought plenty. The painter stated that he could not get the paint to cover the pencil markings so he was running out of the paint from doing so many coats. I asked him if he had primed the areas with the primer I had provided. He stated that he had forgotten.

I bought more paint even though I was very angry that this had occurred. He stated that he would be back the following day to complete the job. The painter did not show up. I contacted him that same day and he reported that he was busy. He stated that he would try to return over the weekend. I told him not to bother as my entire house was tore up and I had not where to eat, sit or work. I in turn ended up having to paint the house myself.

I learned that I need to be more pro-active in searching for a home painter and not just use someone because their prices might be lower than others. The lowest price doesn't always compute to a decent job.

There is no way...

...I will leave any worker in my house to finish the work by himself. You have to make sure they are doing the job as you want it. Oftentimes you don't see eye to eye or they don't really understand what you meant, so in order to avoid misunderstanding do yourself a favor and stay around.
