Faux Painted Accent Wall in My Family Room

Faux Painted Accent Wall

This is the end wall in a long room, with a family room at one end and a dining room at the other.

The dining room and two of the family room walls are a bright yellow with a slight mustard tinge. We wanted a deeper color for the end wall - something that would set this off as being more of a separate area from the dining room.

The dining room area is very cheery with the yellow paint and with a triple sliding glass door on one side. We wanted something that would look a little dimmer and cozier for the family room area.

We also wanted something that would maybe blend in with the hardwood floors and be a focal point for our little decorative elephant collection. However, we didn't want anything that was so dark it would shorten the room.

We chose a medium brick shade and decided to use a faux painting method. We painted the wall the same yellow as the rest of the walls, but dabbed the brick color on rather heavily with a natural sea sponge. The effect was just what we wanted. That wall sets that area of the long room apart, and it picks up the colors of some of our decorative items and the wood flooring.

Since then, we have hung a painting on an opposite wall that has the same brick tones in the background, and I occasionally put throw pillows on the couch that also pick up the brick tones.

I think if you have a very large room, then a solid accent wall looks great. However, in a small or narrow room, adding a faux touch to the accent wall will brighten it up, still add a good contrast and not make your room look smaller.

it's a pleasant contrast

I like how the brick color contrasts with the mustard, and the neutral furniture helps the whole effect come together very nicely.
